A fight broke out between Chinese and African Americans on 8th Avenue, several people were injured

On September 17, a violent incident unfolded on Brooklyn’s 8th Avenue, involving a clash between individuals of Asian and African descent, resulting in multiple injuries and two arrests, with one suspect facing charges. Community members highlighted the need to avoid sensationalizing such events, stating that while this incident reflects ethnic tensions, it’s crucial not to escalate hostilities between neighborhoods.

The altercation reportedly began in the afternoon when a young African American man entered a residential building at 750 54th Street, which is home to members of the Asian community and is identified by a sign reading “He Xing Tang.” The reasons behind the initial argument remain unclear, but it quickly escalated into a violent confrontation.

A nearby resident observed that the African American man appeared to be at a disadvantage in the initial encounter but left the premises, only to return shortly afterward, seemingly frustrated. This time, he came armed with a metal chain he had taken from a neighboring property and re-entered “He Xing Tang.” The presence of the weapon prompted a more aggressive reaction from the residents, leading to injuries on both sides amid significant chaos. This neighbor noted that the African American man does not live in the 8th Avenue area.

Law enforcement swiftly arrived, along with emergency responders, who transported both the injured African American man and an Asian resident to a local hospital. Two Asian individuals were arrested on the scene, with one being charged with a felony during a court hearing on September 18. A woman inside “He Xing Tang” mentioned she was waiting for someone to be released but declined to share further details.

Liu Baozhi, captain of the Asian American Civilian Patrol in Brooklyn, shared his thoughts on the situation, criticizing some social media narratives that exaggerated the incident, claiming that an individual of African descent was wielding a sword and attempted a daylight robbery. Liu emphasized that, in his view, this was merely a local dispute that escalated into a fight, urging the community to approach the matter with calm instead of rash reactions until they have a complete understanding of what transpired.

He stressed the importance of not panicking over local conflicts and avoiding the incitement of ethnic grievances or hostilities that could further inflame racial tensions. While the majority of residents along 8th Avenue identify as Asian, Liu pointed out that Sunset Park is fundamentally a multicultural community, and fostering harmonious coexistence among diverse ethnic groups is in everyone’s best interest.
