Xie Feng- Promote Sino-US relations to stabilize, get better, and move forward

On October 15, the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations held its 2024 Annual Awards Dinner in New York, where both Chinese and American leaders sent congratulatory messages. Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, read a message from Chinese President Xi Jinping, emphasizing that fostering stable, positive, and forward-moving U.S.-China relations is the responsible choice.

During his remarks, Xie shared that President Xi’s letter reflects a sincere desire to value and enhance U.S.-China relations and mutual achievements. He highlighted a firm commitment to expand openness and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, calling for increased dialogue and the sharing of opportunities from China.

Xie noted that over the 45 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties, U.S.-China relations have withstood challenges, benefiting both nations and promoting peace and stability worldwide. As we stand at a new historical starting point, it is vital to pursue a responsible and correct path for the U.S.-China relationship that honors history and serves the people and the global community.

To maintain stability in U.S.-China relations, Xie emphasized the need for visionary leadership that recognizes the realities of globalization. He urged both nations to abandon narrow-minded calculations and to acknowledge that neither side can do without the other. He called for a path based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation. Addressing Taiwan, he asserted it as sacred Chinese territory, stating that “Taiwan independence” is incompatible with peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He insisted that real preservation of peace requires adherence to the One China principle and the three Sino-U.S. joint communiqués, firmly opposing “Taiwan independence.”

Xie also expressed that improving U.S.-China relations requires unwavering confidence in cooperation and mutual benefit. Under the leadership of Mr. Ford, the Atlantic Pacific Investment Group has been rooted in the Chinese market for 24 years, successfully viewing China as its primary investment destination, and today’s recognition is well-deserved. In the previous year, 1,920 new American companies were established in China, with 80% planning to reinvest their profits this year. This shows that companies are choosing to invest in China rather than pull back, with their concerns centered not on a “second Chinese shock” but on the fear of missing out on opportunities in China.

Looking to the future, he noted that to advance U.S.-China relations, there must be courage to tackle challenges. Established in 1966 during a time of isolation and hostility, the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations has helped facilitate the “Ping-Pong Diplomacy,” creating bridges for friendship and practical cooperation over the past half-century. He expressed hope for more investors committed to friendly collaboration rather than opportunists looking to exploit U.S.-China relations. He called for a collective voice against decoupling, Cold War mentality, and confrontation, and for support of exchange, cooperation, and friendship to realize the “San Francisco vision” and build a bright future for U.S.-China relations.

The dinner was attended by approximately 400 guests, including National Committee Executive Vice Chairman Greenberg, President Orlins, and William Ford, Chairman and CEO of the Atlantic Pacific Investment Group, who received an award from the committee that evening.

The State Administration of Cultural Heritage jointly launched the -Public Welfare Donation- activity with relevant institutions

On October 15, the National Cultural Heritage Administration held a special press conference in Beijing titled “Exploring Cultural Heritage and Supporting Rural Development.” During the event, Deputy Director of the National Cultural Heritage Administration, Jie Bing, provided insights into the efforts made to preserve cultural heritage in urban and rural areas and their impact on enhancing the beauty of rural communities.

“At this press conference, we aim to shed light on our recent initiatives,” Jie said. “In recent years, the administration has been committed to aligning with the Central Committee’s mandate to effectively connect poverty alleviation achievements with rural revitalization. We are actively promoting systematic protection of cultural heritage across urban and rural areas.”

He elaborated on several measures being taken, which include protecting and inheriting tangible cultural resources, leveraging the ‘cultural heritage +’ concept to empower rural revitalization, preserving and promoting outstanding traditional farming culture, and encouraging widespread public engagement in these efforts.

To further support rural development, the National Cultural Heritage Administration has partnered with related organizations to initiate a “Charity Step Donation” activity. Funds raised through this initiative will be used for revitalization efforts in the Huaiyang District of Zhoukou City, Henan Province, a targeted support area for the administration. The official launch of the program is scheduled for October 18 in Huaiyang District.

Jie highlighted the administration’s commitment to targeted assistance as a significant political responsibility. “We are leveraging our cultural resource advantages to help consolidate and expand poverty alleviation efforts and comprehensively promote rural revitalization in Huaiyang District,” he stated. The administration has dispatched ten highly capable individuals with extensive leadership experience to participate in on-the-ground efforts. These team members are engaging with grassroots initiatives to uncover and reinforce Huaiyang’s historical and cultural value, exploring synergies between cultural heritage protection and leisure agriculture, as well as cultural tourism to bolster rural revitalization.

During the press conference, the administration, along with the Tencent Charity Foundation and the Huaiyang District government, signed a cooperation agreement for the “Charity Step Donation” initiative. Through this program, participants can donate their walking steps via the Tencent Charity platform, which will match donations at a certain ratio. The “Step Donation Mini Program” will also feature 16 world cultural heritage sites, such as the Liangzhu Ancient City and Longmen Grottoes, allowing participants to immerse themselves in both the beauty of movement and the allure of cultural heritage.

Iran says it will respond ‘appropriately’ to Israeli strikes but does not seek war

In light of the recent Israeli airstrikes, Iran’s leadership appears to be considering its response, as the Iranian foreign minister has called for a UN Security Council meeting. During a cabinet meeting, President Masoud Pezeshkian stated, “We do not seek war, but we will defend the rights of our nation and country,” adding that they would respond “appropriately” to what he termed the aggression of the Zionist regime.

However, it remains uncertain whether Pezeshkian’s comments indicate a potential direct military response, increased support for regional proxies like Hezbollah, or a focus on diplomatic avenues following the airstrikes on Saturday. Discussions are ongoing within Iran about whether the Israeli attack, which turned out to be more contained than anticipated, necessitates a military counteraction and if appearing passive would portray the country as weak.

The U.S. has expressed concerns that ongoing retaliatory strikes between the major military powers in the region could escalate into a full-blown war. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has also responded, cautioning that the “evil committed by the Zionist regime two nights ago should neither be downplayed nor exaggerated.” He emphasized that it is the responsibility of Iranian authorities to demonstrate the nation’s strength to Israel, hinting that a military response is not immediately planned as Iran evaluates its options.

After the Israeli attack, which inflicted limited damage according to Tehran, President Joe Biden urged for an end to the escalations. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the strikes, which were retaliation for a missile barrage fired by Iran earlier in the month, and reiterated that the Security Council must convene on Monday. He characterized Israel’s actions as a serious threat to international peace and security and asserted Iran’s right to a legitimate response to these “criminal attacks.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, meanwhile, declared that, “The air force attacked throughout Iran,” stressing that they targeted Iran’s defense capabilities and missile production capacity. Reports cite anonymous officials stating that Israel’s operation successfully damaged air defense systems critical to several oil and petrochemical facilities.

Earlier, Pezeshkian acknowledged the deaths of four Iranian soldiers in the attack, asserting, “Enemies of Iran should know these brave people are standing fearlessly in defense of their land and will respond to any stupidity with tact and intelligence.” Former Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, now a strategic adviser, avoided direct retaliation threats, instead suggesting that the West must move away from outdated paradigms and collaborate with Iran to end violence in Palestine, Gaza, and Lebanon.

In a typical method of messaging to the West, Iran’s UN mission accused the U.S. of complicity in the airstrikes, asserting that since the Israeli warplanes operated from Iraqi airspace, this ties back to U.S. military control of the region. Araghchi stressed that Israel’s regional power would wane without U.S. support, asserting America’s involvement in various military actions across the region.

As Iran deliberates its next steps, significant factors come into play including the potential diplomatic fallout from alienating its Arab partners, the impact on its struggling economy, and the risks associated with further Israeli military actions, which could result in much more severe consequences than the recent strikes. Public backing for Iran’s expansive foreign policies remains vulnerable, according to recent polls conducted by the Middle East Institute.

Man faces jail over AI-generated child abuse images

Hugh Nelson, a 27-year-old from Bolton, has been at the center of a shocking legal case that has raised serious concerns about the use of artificial intelligence in creating child abuse imagery. As a graphic design student, Nelson utilized AI to craft explicit computer-generated images depicting the abuse of children, which he then sold to other individuals engaged in similar crimes.

In a recent court hearing at Bolton Crown Court, Nelson admitted to 11 offenses, including charges of intentionally encouraging or assisting the rape of a child under 13. The judge overseeing the case, Martin Walsh, described it as “difficult and troubling,” highlighting its significance in the ongoing battle against child exploitation. He noted that he would take time to deliberate before delivering a sentence.

Prosecutor David Toal explained that the case emerged from Operation Influence, an investigation targeting trends related to artificial intelligence in child sexual exploitation. He emphasized the alarming advancements in AI technology, with its ability to produce increasingly realistic imagery.

According to the prosecution, Nelson was identified as the administrator of a paedophile chatroom after engaging in discussions with an undercover officer last May. He admitted to taking commissions for AI-generated images depicting child sexual abuse, boasting that he had created over 60 characters, which included portrayals as young as six months old, and charged around £80 for new characters.

Despite having no prior convictions, Nelson was arrested at his family home in Egerton in June. During police questioning, he revealed a sexual interest primarily in girls aged about 12 and acknowledged that he turned to the internet to connect with like-minded individuals, eventually spiraling into the creation of these disturbing images, which he described as having “got out of control.”

Investigations led to the seizure of various devices, which contained a vast number of indecent images and conversations with adults in countries including France, Italy, and the United States, discussing child exploitation. However, the court found no direct evidence of any physical or sexual assault against a child.

Defending Nelson, Bob Elias described him as a “shy, gauche man” who led a lonely and isolated life at home. He argued that Nelson sought validation and a sense of belonging from his online community, admitting that he had gained only modest financial returns from his actions. Elias conveyed the profound shock and horror experienced by Nelson’s family upon learning of his crimes.

The court noted that Nelson expressed remorse for his actions in a letter to the judge, recognizing the depravity of his behavior. He pleaded guilty to multiple sexual offenses, including intentionally encouraging or assisting the rape of a child under 13, making and distributing indecent images, and attempting to incite sexual activity with a minor.

As the community grapples with the implications of this case, it serves as a grim reminder of the intersection between technology and crime, raising urgent questions about the safety of vulnerable children in the digital age.

To attract tourists to Tibet for winter tours, Tibet will give away 10,000 air tickets and train tickets

On October 18th, during an interview in Lhasa, it was announced that the seventh round of the “Winter Travel to Tibet” campaign has officially kicked off. The Tibet Autonomous Region government unveiled new cultural and tourism promotional policies, including the distribution of 10,000 free flights and 10,000 free train tickets to attract tourists to the region this winter.

The tourism market in Tibet experiences significant fluctuations due to its unique geography and climate, creating distinct peaks and troughs in visitor numbers. Since 2018, the regional government has implemented promotional policies for “Winter Travel to Tibet.” During the winter period, visitors can benefit from free entry to A-level tourist attractions (excluding temple sites) and discounted hotel rates. This latest “Winter Travel to Tibet” campaign will run until March 15, 2025.

The distribution of 10,000 free flights and train tickets will be conducted through a lottery system, with online offerings each year. The free flight tickets come with priority reservation rights for tickets to the Potala Palace, while the free train tickets include complimentary high-quality attraction tickets and vouchers for premium hotel stays.

In addition to the free tickets, Tibet has announced a series of consumer discount vouchers for “family travel,” “group travel,” and “senior travelers.” This initiative will also involve a lottery system, where, following the format of “pre-travel lottery and post-travel redemption,” each year, lucky families, groups, and senior travelers who purchase flights or train tickets to Tibet will receive 10,000 vouchers valued at 1,000 RMB each. These vouchers can be used for cultural and tourism products within Tibet.

Two trains collide in Wales leaving one person dead and 15 injured

A tragic train collision occurred near Llanbrynmair in Powys on the evening of October 21, 2024, resulting in one passenger fatality and 15 others receiving treatment for injuries. Witnesses described a harrowing scene as passengers were thrown to the floor upon impact, with images revealing a crumpled carriage.

On the morning following the incident, investigators arrived at the site to determine the factors leading to the collision on a single-track section of the Cambrian line, which includes a passing loop designed for trains to alternate passing each other. Preliminary reports suggest that the train designated to stop did not, although the low-speed nature of the collision prevented derailment.

Authorities have launched a multi-agency investigation, examining potential causes, including the effects of autumn leaves on rail conditions, which can create dangerous situations akin to black ice on roads.

Survivors reported a range of injuries, with some suffering broken bones, though officials stated that none of the injuries were considered life-threatening. Witness Jonah Evans, 25, recalled the moment of impact: “There was a train that was stopped and the other train couldn’t stop. The driver warned us to brace ourselves, and injuries followed, with some losing teeth and others with cracked ribs.”

Anthony Hurford, a passenger en route to Shrewsbury, described the frightening experience: “We went from maybe 40 or 50 miles per hour to a sudden stop. My laptop飛 was thrown ahead of me, and I was left on the floor, completely stunned. There were so many emergency responders; it was overwhelming.”

In a joint statement, Network Rail and Transport for Wales confirmed that the collision occurred at 7:29 PM on October 21. They expressed condolences to the loved ones of the deceased and highlighted the ongoing closure of the Cambrian railway as investigations continue.

British Transport Police Superintendent Andrew Morgan also addressed the media, confirming the death and extending sympathies to the victims and their families. He indicated that a comprehensive investigation was underway to clarify the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Emergency services, including the Welsh ambulance service and Dyfed Powys police, responded promptly to the situation, and the First Minister of Wales, Eluned Morgan, expressed her gratitude to the responders while extending her thoughts to all affected.

The incident recalls a previous train collision in Salisbury in October 2020, where similar conditions related to rail maintenance and autumn leaves played a role in causing injuries.

‘Our Euros start now’- Stanway seeks Lionesses spark before Germany game

England midfielder Georgia Stanway emphasizes the significance of upcoming friendlies as they gear up to defend their European title. Ahead of the friendly match against Germany at Wembley, a repeat of the Euro 2022 final, Stanway shared her thoughts on the team’s preparation. The 25-year-old Bayern Munich player underscored the importance of these four friendlies as a way to “hit the ground running” before the finals tournament in Switzerland next summer, having already secured qualification in July.

When asked if England’s performance had stagnated since reaching the World Cup final in 2023—especially after recent losses to Belgium and France and narrowly missing out on Olympic qualification—Stanway responded with confidence. “No, I think it’s natural to experience a bit of a comedown after such high achievements. We won the Euros and made it to the World Cup final, which was an incredible accomplishment. It’s expected that there would be a plateau at some point,” she explained.

She acknowledged the struggles in the Nations League but highlighted the positives from their performances against top-ranked teams like France and Sweden. “From those matches, you can see how we want to play as we prepare for the Euros. It’s constructive that we have areas to improve on; this is our chance to address them,” she added.

Stanway sees this period as an exciting starting point for their Euro campaign. “These friendlies are crucial for us to refine our style and begin anew. We want to build on our past successes.”

On a related note, Stanway also addressed the recent news about over 100 professional women’s players signing a letter urging FIFA to end its sponsorship deal with the Saudi state-owned oil company Aramco, citing serious human rights violations. Although she hadn’t read the news at the time of her interview, Stanway expressed solidarity with her fellow players. “We need to stand for what we believe in,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of advocating for women’s rights in sports. “The unity in women’s football allows us to challenge issues together. We know our value and the legacy we want to leave for future generations.”

Regarding the recent appointment of former Bayern Munich men’s head coach Thomas Tuchel as the new England men’s manager, Stanway expressed her support for the decision. “I think it’s fantastic. I’ve worked under a Norwegian manager at Bayern, and it really comes down to finding the right person for the job,” she remarked, recalling her positive experiences with Tuchel. “He was genuinely invested in women’s football and always took the time to engage with us.”

Heading into the match against Germany, Stanway is aware of the challenge that awaits, especially with her clubmates on the opposing side. “You always know what to expect from the Germans—they’re fierce, technically proficient, and relentless. Players like Giulia Gwinn and Klara Bühl pose significant threats,” she concluded, reflecting on the competitive nature of the upcoming game.

The former CEO of A&F clothing company was arrested for sex trafficking. He introduced modeling jobs as bait to lure men into prostitution._1

Former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries, along with his partner Matthew Smith and employee James Jacobson, were arrested and charged on October 22 for alleged involvement in human trafficking and prostitution. The charges accuse them of promising modeling opportunities to young men, luring them into drug-fueled sex parties.

The indictment, filed in Brooklyn federal court, claims that Jeffries and his associates exploited their positions, wealth, and resources to engage in a global operation centered around procuring young men for their sexual appetites.

Federal prosecutor Breon Peace emphasized the severity of the charges, highlighting that those who exploit others under the guise of offering modeling opportunities should be held accountable for their actions. “Sexual exploitation of vulnerable individuals is a crime,” he stated. “Using the glamour of the fashion and modeling industries to entice victims is equally reprehensible.” James Dennehy, the FBI’s New York assistant director, termed the allegations against the trio “disturbing.”

Many of the details in the indictment mirror civil lawsuits filed by multiple young victims, which allege that Jeffries promised them modeling jobs in exchange for sexual acts that satisfied the defendants’ desires.

Attorneys for Jeffries and Smith, Brian Bieber and Joseph Nascimento respectively, responded to media inquiries by stating, “The truth will come out in court.” Jacobson asserted that he was not involved in any coercive or deceptive actions and was unaware of such behaviors occurring.

The three defendants are scheduled to appear in a St. Paul, Minnesota court later after their arrests—Jeffries and Smith in Florida and Jacobson in Wisconsin. They face charges of human trafficking and interstate prostitution, backed by testimonies from 15 alleged victims.

The indictment alleges that between 2008 and 2015, the defendants funded the grooming of dozens of young men for prostitution in hotels located in New York, the UK, France, Italy, and St. Barts in the Caribbean, catering to their sexual interests. Victims reportedly endured drug use and were subjected to demeaning acts involving lubricants, condoms, fetish clothing, sexual toys, and even painful drugs designed to prolong erection, all while being coerced into signing non-disclosure agreements.
