As we approach the second anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, a newly unveiled statue in Antrim, Northern Ireland, has sparked considerable debate over its resemblance to the late monarch. The statue, which debuted on the 6th, faces criticism for its perceived lack of likeness, particularly in facial features, posture, and accessories. Some observers have gone so far as to liken it to Mrs. Doubtfire, the character famously portrayed by Robin Williams in the beloved 90s film.
Reports from The Guardian indicate that shortly after the statue’s unveiling, the government’s website was inundated with mockery and frustration from citizens. One commenter described the installation as “an absolute insult to the Queen,” while another firmly asserted that the statue bears no resemblance to her whatsoever. A particularly outspoken critic suggested that “those who commissioned this statue should cover the costs, not the taxpayers.”
The statue was commissioned by the Antrim Council and created by local artist Anto Brennan. In his defense, Brennan expressed how honored he felt to represent the Queen, claiming that his work aimed to capture her regal presence and reflect her elegance, determination, and dedication to public service. However, despite his good intentions, the statue has received widespread backlash over its facial features, pose, and overall presentation.
Photographs of the statue reveal that it consists of two parts: one depicts the Queen gazing into the distance, while the other features a likeness of the late Prince Philip leaning slightly towards her, accompanied by two corgi dogs at their feet.
